PFLAG OMAHA - Community News Archive: December 2003

An online poll on same-sex marriage taken by American Families Association turned up results that weren’t expected by that conservative organization.

The AFA, which describes itself as "America’s pro-family online activism organization," asked its members to vote for one of these options: (1) I oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and civil unions. (2) I favor legalization of homosexual marriage. (3) I favor a civil union with the full benefits of marriage except for the name.

A few people who favor marriage equality passed along word of the poll to their friends. Word spread on the Internet. National PFLAG sent information about the poll to its chapters. Omaha PFLAG and probably other chapters passed that information along to members.

A groundswell developed in support of same-sex marriage.

The tally several days after the start of the poll: 35 percent (182,783 votes) opposed to same-sex marriage, 57 percent (298,106 votes) favoring same-sex marriage and 8 percent (43,390 votes) favoring civil unions.

At the start of the poll, the AFA promised to pass along the results to Congress.

This is hopefully an incomplete list of Omaha congregations which are gay-friendly and are welcoming to all. Let us know of others, and we will publish them as well.
